EDDY, MARY PIERSON. (1864-1923). American missionary in Syria and the first female medical doctor licensed by the Ottoman Empire. ALS. (
“Mary P. Eddy”). 4pp. 8vo. N.p. [Beirut], April 28, 1902. On a single sheet of paper to Mrs. Campbell.
“Many times the past six months since leaving America I wished that I might visit your home again and tell you of my new location and work. My brother was in Syria a fortnight ahead of me, and I only reached here just the day before Christmas which we all spent together. The Mission annual meeting in the early part of January located me at J[o]unieh to open the hitherto unoccupied district of Keserwan, comprising 235 towns and villages. I went down to Sidon packed up my hospital furniture, beds, instrument cases, tents, tent equipment and chairs, tables, etc. These were shipped to J[o]unieh in a vessel, which after a voyage of eight days was wrecked in a severe gale. This was at first a staggering blow. I could not believe nor realize the loss. The hospital tent alone cost 27 English pounds, and my magic lantern was to be my mainstay in teaching Bible stories and impressing Gospel truths on the hearts of the people in their new location. However, I went at once to work and with the help of the native carpenters we have now both our home and dispensary in running order. The house we occupy is a temporary one, but the larger hospital building is rapidly approaching completion. It would be such a pleasure if you and Mr. Campbell could see what a beautiful situation the hospital has, and how well fitted it will be to attract the patients, as it is situated on the highway to Tripoli and at the junction of three carriage roads."

FREUD, SIGMUND. (1856-1939). Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis. ADS. (

THEODOR REIK (1888-1969). With Reik’s autograph manuscript defining psychology. 1p. 8vo. N.p., n.d. In German with translations.
“
Testimonial
It is a well-known fact for everybody who knows psychoanalytical literature that the numerous works of Dr. Theodor Reik about the application of psychoanalysis, especially those concerning religion and ritual, are among the best and most influential in the field, I would say even one of a kind. Whosoever has the opportunity should feel obligated to support Dr. Reik’s career and to assist him in order to enable him to continue his work…”
Reik’s autograph manuscript about psychology states:
“
Technique Sais [?]
Psychology is the scientific endeavor to master your own emotions using the object of another person through scientific understanding. If you want to know yourself, seeing how others fare forms only the less important intellectual side of this process where the direction is indicated correctly. When you see how others fare and compare yourself consciously with them, you will not profit much. [It is the] Beginning of understanding.”"

Under the circumstances all that I could do was to throw in a caveat in your favor should the alterations ever take place, and be of a satisfactory nature – by mentioning your wishes to the President of the R[oyal] S[ociety] in confidence and should I hear more about the matter will not fail to give you intelligence, and if you then desire it, make your wishes on the subject publicly known, as the nomination to the officer will I presume rest with the Pres[iden]t. & Council of the R.S. I think you underrate your claims graciously when you say ‘you know nothing of astronomy.’ I am happy meanwhile to hear of your being so comfortably situated and that you still retain a penchant for x and y. Jones you know is married and leads an exemplary & sober life – his wife has been very ill. Though influenced by classical sculpture Moore, from the beginning of his career, created non-traditional works that were initially rejected by the mainstream art world. In the late 1920s, his abstract sculpture captured the public’s interest and he was awarded commissions, gallery shows and a teaching post. During the late 1950s Moore began to concentrate on larger works designed to be viewed outdoors and for which he became known throughout the world. One such example is Moore’s sculpture
Lincoln Center Reclining Figure, commissioned in 1963 and installed in New York’s Lincoln Center’s reflecting pool between the Vivian Beaumont Theater and Avery Fisher Hall."

WARCHALOWSKI, ADOLF. (1886-1928). Austrian industrialist, aviation pioneer and his country’s first licensed pilot with his sister-in-law
ANNA WARCHALOWSKI. (?-?). First Austrian female airplane passenger. SP.
(“Adolf Warchalowski”) and (
“Anna Warchalowski”). 1p. Oblong 12mo. N.p., [c. 1910]. A sepia postcard photograph depicting the pair in Warchalowski’s Farman biplane. Adolf is gripping the control stick while Anna, seated behind him, holds onto a strut. A printed German caption at the top of the photograph states “First Austrian female flight passenger / Engineer Adolf Warchalowski / Wiener Neustadt Airfield.” Signed by both in black ink on the lower margin of the cream-colored, card-stock mount.
In 1910, Warchalowski, an Austrian machine engineer, imported a Farman biplane from Paris to the Wiener Neustadt airfield where it was altered and renamed the Warchalowski “Vindobona.” In February he set the first two of many Austrian flight records, for the longest sustained flight and longest flight with a passenger. Shortly thereafter, he flew with his sister-in-law aboard, setting another record for the first Austrian female passenger during a ten-minute flight, reaching a height of 20-30 meters. Anna’s historic flight was reported in the June 1910 issue of
Aircraft magazine. Later that year he flew Austria’s Archduke and Archduchess. Warchalowski was granted the first pilot’s license by the Austrian Aero Club in April 1910, and his August 1910 flight over Vienna to celebrate Emperor Franz Josef’s 80
th birthday captured the imagination of the Austrian public and made international headlines. He continued to set aviation records and perfect his aircraft design, but attempts to market his own aircraft were unsuccessful. Vienna’s Warchalowskigasse is named in his honor. He died in 1928 on his 42
nd birthday.
In the lower right corner is the pencil notation “1910” in an unidentified hand. In excellent condition and rare."

My Lord, I never before regretted having a fair wind but your quick voyage is of so much more importance than mine that I sincerely regret your not having a fair wind. I send your Excellency copies of some letters of mine which in conversation you may have occasion to refer to. Capt. Thesiger who will have the honor of delivering this letter has been for many years a Capt. in the Russian Navy but left it two years ago from the extraordinary conduct of the late Emperor. I have sent a fast sailing Lugger to attend on your Mission, the progress and result of which as far as may be proper for me to be made acquainted with I must be in a state of constant anxiety to know, that the fleet may be collected ready for a push, should the Russian fleet make any movements indicating an intention of going to sea. I trust your Excellency allowing Captain Sotheron to give me notice of it by one of the small Vessels. I have not a word of news. Wishing your Excellency every success I have the honor to Remain your Lordship’s most obedient servant…” "

CHARLES ROGERS GROOMS). (b. 1937). American artist known for his colorful pop-art, painted-collage sculptures. ALS. (

August 2 Year of our Lord 1968
Wow wie much guilt but also lots of thinking of you. Dear Tom, Well here we are in good ole Jugoslavia.
The coast is rocks, rocks and more rocks. Sea urchins & tar the bane of the coast. We passed the border from Itay about July 1 and headed all the way down the coast. Ed & Sarah Flood who helped me in Chicago went with us in our brand new Fiat 600 License Plate ROMA. Everyone thinks we’re Italians. Great walled towns and Islands and real clear water and really hot. That’s Peter Russell our Serbian Croatian expert. We’ve been traveling together for 2 weeks. Monastary hunting in Serbia. Do you know about them? I didn’t but we kept seeing these fat books kramed with fresco beauties. (This was on the Dalmation Coast were theres lots of stone carving but not so much fresco work. Soo to make a (over)"

PAGANINI, NICCOLO. (1782-1840). Italian musician and composer; regarded as the violin’s greatest virtuoso. AMusQS. (
“N. Paganini”). 1p. 8vo. London, July 28, 1833. Nine double measures of the theme from the third movement,
Rondo del Campanello, (also known as
La Clochette) marked “
Allegretto,” from his famous
Violin Concerto No.2 in B minor, Op. 7.
A child prodigy, Paganini began his career playing throughout the surroundings of his native Genoa, followed by a successful premiere in Milan in 1813, after which his name became synonymous with virtuoso. Many of Paganini’s compositions were deemed unplayable, prompting some to claim that his talent was the result of supernatural, if not diabolical, influences. Composed in 1826, his
Violin Concerto No. 2 is best remembered for the third movement, the theme of which Paganini has written out for piano in the present example. The work inspired the third of Franz Liszt’s six
Grandes études de Paganini, S. 141 (1851) and Johann Strauss, Jr.’s
Walzer à la Paganini, Op. 11.
On May 14, 1831, Paganini arrived in London where he gave the first of a series of 18 concerts. So well received was his debut, that even
The Times, which had protested the high ticket prices, admitted, “‘He is not only the finest player that has ever existed on that instrument, but he forms a class by himself,’” (
The New Grove Dictionary). He returned to England for additional tours during 1832 and 1833. On July 15, 1833, he gave his last documented performance of the
2nd Violin Concerto at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Our lengthy quotation was written out the day after he performed at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden on July 27, 1833.
Gently creased with some bleeding of the ink. Matted with a lithograph of Paganini; the quotation is slightly toned at the right margin, observable beneath the mat. Piano scores in Paganini’s hands are rare and desirable."
