PALME, OLOF. (1927-1986). Swedish statesman and prime minister, assassinated in 1986. SP. (“Olof Palme”). 1p. 8vo. N.p., N.d. A black-and-white bust photograph of a smiling Palme signed on the matte.
A protégé of longtime Swedish Prime Minister Tage Erlander, Palme assumed leadership of the Swedish Social Democratic Party in 1969 and remained at its helm for 20 years, serving as PM from 1969-1976. A controversial figure at home and abroad, Palme supported third world liberation movements and was a vocal critic of superpower policies, notably U.S. involvement in Vietnam and the Soviet Union’s military response to the Prague Spring. Palme was shot and killed at close range on February 28, 1986, while walking in Stockholm with his wife – a crime that remains unsolved to this day. Some very light surface wear to the photo; broadly signed in blue ink and in fine condition. Uncommon.
