ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. (1882-1945). Thirty-second president of the United States. TLS. (“Franklin D. Roosevelt”). 1p. Small 4to. Washington, December 19, 1933. On White House stationery. To 15-year old Rose Lippiello of New York City.

“One of your good friends has written to me about you. I am sorry to hear that you have been so long a sufferer from the paralysis, but I am proud to know of the splendid spirit with which you are bearing your afflictions. That spirit is bound to bring happiness to you and to everybody near to you. This note will bring you my own best wishes for Christmas and the New Year and for all the future…”

During a 1921 vacation at Maine’s Campobello Island, at the age of 39, Roosevelt contracted polio, an affliction that threatened the future of his public career. Despite paralysis from the waist down, Roosevelt refused to succumb to the disease and its physical limitations. In his continuing search for a cure, FDR visited a spa at Warm Springs, Georgia in 1924. While there, he swam daily in the therapeutic waters, a regimen that developed his upper body and offered him increased mobility. Impressed with both the results and the facility, Roosevelt purchased the spa in 1926, which still exists today as the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. On the president’s birthday in 1938 Roosevelt and his law partner founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (also known as the “March of Dimes,” a term coined by Eddie Cantor as a play on words for the popular newsreel, “March of Time”) which, one dime at a time, funded research into the prevention and cure of polio. Ever committed to helping those afflicted by paralysis, Roosevelt penned our warm letter to a fellow sufferer during his first year in the White House. References to polio by FDR as president are rare.

With the original envelope. Folded with some dust staining and light wear; otherwise in very good condition.
