After learning Pitman shorthand at his father’s insistence, Gregg taught himself a variety of other shorthand systems from which he borrowed to create his own form of shorthand first called Light-Line Phonography. His new system soon became widely adopted, and Gregg promoted it by publishing a magazine, pamphlets and, after immigrating to the United States, establishing a school and Gregg Publishing Co. which first published Greggs Shorthand in 1893 and in numerous editions thereafter. By the 1940s, Gregg Shorthand was the most widely used shorthand system in the United States and remains so to this day.
