Roget, a physician, author and lecturer, is remembered for his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases, a compendium of synonyms and antonyms, published in 1852, which went through 28 printings during his lifetime. In addition to his famous lexicographical work, Roget’s long and varied career in the pursuit of knowledge led him to write papers on physiology, health and electromagnetism as well as entries for the Encyclopedia Britannica.
At the foot of our letter, Roget noted his Bloomsbury address, just steps from the Britism Museum.
