MAGRITTE, RENE. (1898-1967). Belgian artist; painted many of the most haunting and well-known Surrealist paintings. Signed image. (“Magritte”). 1p. Oblong Large 4to. (Overall size 12½” x 16”). N.p., N.d. [1963]. An original, signed limited-edition lithograph entitled Les Bijoux Indiscrets, #11 of 20 of the rare hors commerce proofs (i.e., not for sale) from an edition of 75, with the title written in the lower margin by Magritte (Kaplan-Baum 3).

While studying art in Brussels, Magritte experimented with Futurism and Cubism, but inspired by Giorgio de Chirico’s 1914 painting The Song of Love, he began, in the mid-1920s, to paint subjects with the cold realism that characterizes his mature work. After Belgian art critics expressed their disapproval of his work, he sought out Surrealist circles in Paris where he not only showed his work but also contributed theoretical works on the subject, such as his 1929 essay “Les mots et les images.” Upon his return to Belgium, he became somewhat estranged from the French Surrealists while evolving his personal style, writing on art theory and showing his works internationally. In 1963, Paris’ Vingtième Siècle published Magritte’s color lithograph Les Bijoux Indiscrets in a limited edition of 75, of which 20 were hors-commerce proofs. Magritte’s influence can be seen in pop art, minimalism, conceptual art, and advertising.

In excellent condition.
