Hughes, a Republican who served as governor of New York from 1907 to 1910, became an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1910 to 1916, when he mounted an unsuccessful presidential campaign against Woodrow Wilson. He served as secretary of state under Presidents Harding and Coolidge and in 1930 President Hoover appointed him chief justice, a post he held until 1941.
