CHARLES III. (b. 1948). King of the United Kingdom & his then wife, DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES (1961-1997). Christmas Card. (“Charles and Diana”). 2pp. Oblong Large 8vo. N.p., N.d. [1984]. Inscribed by Charles to “Joan.” A Christmas and New Year’s card signed by Charles and Diana opposite a color family photograph depicting the prince and princess with their two children, William, a toddler, and Harry, an infant.

The eldest child of Queen Elizabeth, Charles was, due to his mother’s long reign, the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history, until his mother’s death resulted in his ascension as monarch in September 2022. In 1981, Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the 4th Baron Fermoy, in a much-publicized “fairy-tale” wedding. The couple bore two children, William (b. 1982) and Harry (b. 1984), who follow their father in the line of succession. Unfortunately, the couple’s intractable personal difficulties led to extramarital affairs beginning in 1986, and media reports of their indiscretions became a staple of the tabloids. In 1992, Prime Minister John Major announced the couple’s intention to separate and in 1996 the pair divorced.

Though stripped of her royal title, Diana retained her fame, which she used to promote humanitarian causes while maintaining a residence at Kensington Palace. Her life was cut short by a tragic automobile accident in Paris in 1997.

The front of the card bears the gold-embossed coat of arms of both Charles and Diana. In excellent condition.
