HOCKNEY, DAVID. (b. 1937). Influential British pop artist. Signed postcard. (“David Hockney”). 1p. Large 8vo. (5¾” x 8¼”). N.p., N.d. A color reproduction of his lithograph Man Ray, 1974 (Scottish Arts Council 171).
Influenced by pop art and cubism and working in a variety of media, Hockney rose to prominence for his large, colorful acrylic paintings of California poolside scenes starting with his 1967 A Bigger Splash. His interest in cubism can be seen throughout his works in which he delights “in the deconstruction of proportion, linear perspective, and color theory… Flat planes exist side-by-side in a patchwork, muddling our sense of distance,” as can be seen in his 1974 portrait of the influential American Surrealist and Dada artist Man Ray (1890-1976), known for his paintings, portrait photographs and photograms, (“David Hockney,” www.theartstory.com).
Broadly signed in black ink in the lower margin. In very fine condition.
